Just read about Cyclone Nargis and the destruction she has caused in her wake in Myanmar. With over 22,000 dead and nearly 40,000 missing, this is certainly no small tragedy. The country has been sent back to the dark ages for God’s sake! Pretty much on the lines of Indonesia after the tsunami.
It is in times like these, you really question the presence of God. I mean why kill thousands of innocents? The poor for whom everyday is a struggle for survival. And even if you have survived the storm, what’s staring you in the face? No water, food, possibly the deaths of loved ones, lack of communication and a lifetime of struggle to again rebuild your life.
The world as of now is pouring aid into the country. But this will go on for a few days as long as the media attention is on it. After that, all that will be left on the grounds are the actual victims and their stories and memories.
And while all this is going on what am I thinking? Will Mumbai be able to win its match? Even as thousands of children are orphaned and millions are rendered homeless, my chief concern is can Mumbai pull it off? This is how shallow life has become. We care only about our immediate families and ourselves. Who cares what happens to millions others who are suffering in our neighbourhood? As long as a bunch of cricketers can pull of an unlikely victory in the IPL, I’ll sleep happily tonight. So what if an entire nation suffers nearby?
